The creation of Super Mutants began with the Forced Evolutionary Virus, a pre-war bioweapon intended to enhance human soldiers. However, later generations often suffered from cognitive degradation, becoming mindless brutes driven by instinct. This split created a complex dynamic where some factions sought peace through forced conversion, while others simply raided for resources. The Brotherhood of Steel viewed the virus as an abomination and fought to contain it, seizing Mariposa in their early days. Yet, the Enclave later weaponized FEV themselves, creating new mutants in places like Vault 87.
