Goodsprings Ambush
Shot in the head and left for dead, one courier's survival draws them into an ongoing war for the Mojave.
The Goodsprings Ambush marks the definitive starting point of Fallout: New Vegas, occurring in 2281 when the player character, a courier, is targeted by an unknown assailant. This event transforms a simple delivery job into a life-or-death struggle for survival and revenge. The protagonist survives a gunshot wound to the head, setting off a chain of events that draws them into the ongoing conflict between governing factions vying for control of the Mojave Desert. It establishes the core motivation: finding the man who shot them while recovering the stolen Platinum Chip.
- Perpetrator
- Benny, the leader of the Chairmen, who operates out of The Tops casino but does not own it.
Lore & Background
The ambush stems from a high-stakes delivery mission involving the Platinum Chip, a data storage device capable of upgrading the operating system and weaponry of Mr. House's Securitrons. The original plan was to deliver this chip to Mr. House, the reclusive dictator of New Vegas who survived the nuclear war in a life-support chamber. However, Benny, the mobster leader of the New Vegas Strip's ruling Chairmen, intercepted the courier and arranged the ambush. Motivated by greed and a desire to usurp Mr. House, Benny stole the Chip and shot the courier in the head, leaving them in a grave at the Goodsprings Cemetery, which is explicitly part of the town. This act of betrayal highlights the treacherous nature of the Mojave Wasteland, where even trusted couriers are not safe from the schemes of powerful figures like Benny, who plans to use a unique Securitron with a modified personality module named Yes Man for his coup.
In Their Own Story
The narrative begins with the courier being ambushed by Benny on the outskirts of Goodsprings. After the shooting, the courier lies buried in the desert until Victor, a Securitron robot, digs them out of their shallow grave. The survivor is then taken to Doc Mitchell, a physician in Goodsprings who nurses them back to health. During this recovery process, the doctor informs the player that they looked through the courier's belongings for identification before patching them up. This interaction introduces the first dialogue tree where the player can respond with gratitude, suspicion about their privacy, or confusion about their next steps. Once healed, the courier departs Goodsprings to hunt down Benny and reclaim the Platinum Chip, eventually confronting him in a casino on the New Vegas strip where they can choose to kill him or let him escape.
Reader's Guide
To navigate the aftermath of the ambush, players must first interact with Doc Mitchell to customize their character's appearance (gender, age, race) and allocate points into seven primary attributes known as SPECIAL stats. This customization directly impacts secondary skills like Guns, Medicine, and Speech, which are vital for survival and dialogue options. Early in the game, the player can choose between three main dialogue responses to Doc Mitchell based on their personality or stats. The immediate objective is to track down Benny; however, the path forward involves engaging with various factions like the New California Republic (NCR), Caesar's Legion, or Mr. House. Players should utilize the Pip-Boy 3000 to manage inventory, fast travel to discovered locations, and access dialogue trees that determine their reputation. Remember that some dialogue options require specific stat thresholds, such as 50 points in Barter for discounts or an Intelligence of 7 to impress others.
