Lore & Background

Unlike other vaults designed to test social dynamics or environmental hazards, this facility aimed to keep its inhabitants frozen until the surface became safe again. The cryo pods functioned correctly for over 180 years until the Institute, through their agent Kellogg, deliberately sabotaged the system. Kellogg released a lethal dose of cryo gas into the pods, killing all residents except the Sole Survivor and their spouse. The Sole Survivor's spouse (Nate or Nora) was awakened by Kellogg, spoke briefly, and was then shot dead by him. The Sole Survivor then emerged from stasis due to this tampering, not a gradual malfunction. The Institute's involvement is central to this timeline, as evidence points to their specific interest in Shaun's unmodified pre-War DNA, and his abduction occurred during the sabotage.

In Their Own Story

Cold air hissed as the seal broke, fog clinging to the glass like a ghost. The Sole Survivor blinked against the harsh green light of the terminal, their body stiff from a decade of suspended animation. Beside them, Pamela stirred, her face pale and drawn in the dim emergency glow. They clutched each other, ignoring the silence that had replaced the hum of life support. Outside the thick blast doors, nothing moved but dust settling on rusted metal. They thought they were safe, hidden away from the fire above. But when they returned to the inner chamber after a brief surface trip, the warmth was gone. The cryo room lay in ruin, bodies slumped against broken consoles. Only one pod remained empty, its glass shattered inward. The child was gone, taken by hands unseen in the dark.
