Codsworth

The loyal British-accented robot who cleans up the Commonwealth's messes.

Codsworth is a Mr. Handy model assigned as personal assistant and companion in the Fallout universe. He was stationed with Vault 111 residents before the Great War, serving as a domestic helper for the Sole Survivor's family. After the nuclear holocaust known as the Great War, he awakens alongside the Sole Survivor from cryogenic stasis to aid their trek across the Commonwealth. Unlike other companions mentioned in the game's lore, such as Dogmeat who returns from previous titles, Codsworth is a specific creation of this era, embodying the retro-futuristic technology of the 1950s. His presence offers a unique dynamic, blending household utility with combat readiness.

Lore & Background

Codsworth represents the pinnacle of pre-war automation tailored for luxury living within Vault 111. His programming emphasizes politeness and order, traits that persist even after decades of dormancy in cryogenic stasis. When activated upon the Sole Survivor's awakening, he witnesses the murder of their spouse and the kidnapping of their son, Shaun, yet remains dedicated to the survivor's command. He navigates the dilapidated world of Boston and the surrounding Massachusetts region, known as 'the Commonwealth', maintaining his composure amidst chaos. His journey highlights the contrast between the orderly past and the chaotic present, serving as a living relic of the civilization that was lost.

In Their Own Story

The airlock hissed open, revealing the blinding white of Vault 111's interior where Codsworth hovered near the cryo-pod. He had waited through the Great War, which occurred on October 23, 2077, and the subsequent two centuries until 2287. Upon the Sole Survivor emerging from stasis, he immediately identifies them as his master or mistress. As the player ventures out to search for their missing child, Codsworth accompanies them, his single eye scanning for debris in the ruins of Boston. He frequently remarks on hygiene and safety while navigating dangerous ruins filled with enemies like Feral Ghouls and Super Mutants. His loyalty is absolute; even if other companions leave or turn hostile based on affinity drops, he remains a steadfast protector. The player can order him to hack terminals or pick locks if the Sole Survivor lacks those specific skills.

Reader's Guide

Codsworth serves as a loyal companion who travels with only one other character at a time alongside the Sole Survivor. His utility extends beyond combat; he interacts with the environment on the player's behalf, such as hacking terminals or picking locks when requested. Players can increase his 'affinity' by having him perform actions they agree with, reaching 1,000 points to unlock a specific perk and potentially a romantic partnership. He is equipped with standard Mr. Handy weaponry but can be modified with armor plating for better survivability against random attacks in the open world. Unlike previous entries where critical hits were random, Codsworth's combat assistance in V.A.T.S. allows for targeted strikes using Action Points (AP). If AP is insufficient, he cannot perform these actions. He remains one of the few companions available from the start of the game, providing a consistent presence as the player manages settlements and crafts upgrades.
