Fallout Shelter

Search for your missing child in the ruins of Boston.

Fallout 4 is a 2015 action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It serves as the fourth main entry in the Fallout series, released worldwide on November 10, 2015, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, with next-generation versions arriving on April 25, 2024. The game immerses players in a post-apocalyptic open world set across Boston and the surrounding Massachusetts region, known in-game as "the Commonwealth". Players assume the role of the Sole Survivor, emerging from Vault 111 after witnessing the murder of their spouse and the kidnapping of their son, Shaun. This personal tragedy drives the narrative forward into a dilapidated world filled with factions, quests, and the constant struggle for survival.

Lore & Background

The story begins on October 23, 2077, the day the Great War began, before jumping forward to the year 2287. The setting is a retro-futuristic universe where 1950s aesthetics coexist with advanced technology like laser weapons and nearly-autonomous artificial intelligence. Society relies on bottle caps as currency. The world is populated by returning enemies such as Mole Rats, Super Mutants, Deathclaws, and Feral Ghouls. Four main factions shape the political landscape: the Institute, a secretive society creating synthetic humans called "synths"; the Brotherhood of Steel, a paramilitary group regulating advanced technology; the Minutemen, a militia dedicated to protecting settlements; and other groups vying for control over the Commonwealth's scarce resources.

In Their Own Story

The Sole Survivor emerges from cryogenic stasis in Vault 111 after 210 years of nuclear winter. Venturing into the Commonwealth, they must navigate a world where fast travel is disabled on "Survival Difficulty" and manage settlement happiness by providing food, water, and defense against random attacks. The player can customize over 50 guns with more than 700 modifications and pilot redesigned Power Armor equipped with fusion cores and jet packs. A key mechanic involves companions who react to player actions through a system of love, like, dislike, or hate; raising affinity to 1,000 points unlocks specific perks and potential partnerships. The narrative allows for full character progression via the S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

Reader's Guide

Exploration relies on the Pip-Boy, a wrist-mounted device allowing access to statistics, maps, and Holotapes. Players can use the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.) to slow time and target specific enemy body parts manually, consuming Action Points for each shot. The game introduces extensive crafting and settlement building, enabling players to construct structures, furnish interiors, and establish power grids using scavenged materials. An optional mobile app allows access to the Pip-Boy interface on iOS, Android, and Windows devices outside of gameplay. Bethesda released six downloadable content add-ons, including Far Harbor and Nuka-World. The game shipped 12 million units in its first day, generating $750 million, and received Game of the Year awards from both the D.I.C.E. Awards and British Academy Games Awards.
